All Amanda users, Well, you where right, it was easier to get amanda to use tar based DLE's than I'd thought. It was more than worth the time (very little actually) to rebuild and the change of binaries across virtually all of my IRIX systems (most share /usr/local) was un-noticed by my servers and clients.
I now have a system with tar based DLE for a .866 TerraByte drive (really a raid array) outputting to an 8-slot jukebox with a single SDLT320. Thank you for your encouragement and support. It just keeps getting easier. Below is the 'announcement' to my site's sysadmin archive and distribution list. thank you, Brian --- Brian R Cuttler [EMAIL PROTECTED] Computer Systems Support (v) 518 486-1697 Wadsworth Center (f) 518 473-6384 NYS Department of Health Help Desk 518 473-0773 ----- Forwarded message from Brian Cuttler ----- The new version of amanda I installed on bali:/usr/local is working for bali amanda-server and clients and laksha-amanda server and clients. Also we have established new amanda server on Samar, the Origin 300 rack mount unit in C262, outside of Bimal's office. Samar has only samar as a client at this time and had root partition as a client using xfsdump as is typical. Also we have /usr5 which is the .866 Tbyte array, however since it is too large to backup to a single output tape (SDLT 320) we have installed GNU Tar (from SGI tardist kit) and established entries in the disklist file for each of the top-level user directories on the partition. The SDLT320 resides in an 8-cartridge jukebox, the bottom most item in the rack containing the Origin, raid array and an additional external disk. 3 Tapes where used in the first run of Amanda on Samar. There where two failures (DLE disk list entries in disklist file). These I believe to result from reaching EOT on the SDLT during dump, which do to lack of hold-area was a "direct to tape" ie tar | gzip | dd to tape rather than tar | gzip to holding area; holding area dd to tape. So I think amanda failed the partitions rather than restarting the tar from scratch. Dean has said that we could repartition and use the single spindle external disk for amanda holding area in the near future and this will allow multiple DLEs to be dumped concurrently as well as the giving amanda the chance to send a partition to tape a second time (ie to the next tape volume) when EOT is reached. I will attempt to use TAR for a large partition on Laksha (Raj Agrawal's Origin 300) as well as providing the binaries and instructions to NMR (Lynn McNaughton) for her amanda installation. I will work with Nancy on jukebox/tape changing issues on Samar. This jukebox is wholey unlike the ones on nNewton/Info (and much less conveniently placed).
