Surprisingly, I actually thought about that after I ran the earlier test (mainly because I saw that GNUTAR was UNDEF on my Solaris machine, but it worked anyway). I looked at the code and saw the GNUTAR dumptype will default to regular tar if it can't find gtar when amanda is configured (I think). Nonetheless, I'm happy to try any suggestions, so I recompiled the client and tried again.
