The gcc should have installed cpp too. It should be in the same directory as gcc. Maybe your path is not correct? Does it exist? /usr/local/bin/cpp --version (or wherever sunfreeware installs gcc)

Or maybe first do "make distclean", and then a "configure" -- configure
could have cached some bogus results from the previous /usr/ucb/cc
runs...

Or maybe you need some more pkgs from sunfreeware?
(Never used sunfreeware -- I compiled my gcc on Solaris from source
a looong time ago, still on 2.95.3 on Solaris.)
