None of these seem very likely to me, I must be missing something.

I still believe you are running in a firewall timeout.
Did you try the netcat test that I described there?

Are you 100% sure there is no firewall on the server itself?
iptables -L -n empty?

I think that this might be a clue. The only DLE that returned anything other
than the -2K
estimate was:

planner: time 17.466: got partial result for host strata disk
//crinkle/backmeup$: 0 -> 58089K, 1 -> 57952K, 2 -> 57952K

And there was no such line with a larger time value?
Or did you get "partial results" much later too?

And do you mean that this DLE was successfully backed up?

A samba backup from the server host -- other samaba backups from this
host failed and ALL other estimates failed. Actually,
the estimates didn't fail, it just seems like the server didn't wait
long enough. It took the planner less than 19 seconds to complete; when
I ran 2.4.4p1, last night (on strata, same amanda.conf/disklist files),
it took 4601.851 seconds. Has something changed with the timeouts?

Not inside Amanda, AFAIK.

You don't by accident "etimeout -20" in your amanda.conf file?

Try a network trace at the server end, and verify if you really received
the UDP reply packet that those clients are trying to send, and get no
ACK back.
