I'm surprised nobody else has tried to answer. Probably the best way to see if Amanda is running is to look for an 'amandad' process. As to figuring out estimated time to completion, I don't know - amstatus tries to do a bit of that, but it's notoriously inaccurate, and anyway it's server-side.
