Are you trying to recover from the client or from the server. If from the server, I wonder if there is a character set difference between them. Perhaps one using an 7 or 8 bit char set and the other a 16 bit char set. Again, if trying from the server, might this be yet another tar version incompatibilities? -- Jon H.
