1) yes, file path is different, but it turns out that its a 
   result of links in the file system, I'd walked down the
   correct path, though there was no way to see that based
   on the prior message.

2) Update to gtar 1.22 seems to have been sufficient, didn't also
   need to touch the switches, which are default and what I have
   on other boxes.

Q: Do I want to remove the --no-check-device switch in the general case?
