So, if you want to stick with Debian, the best bet would be to have the Debian file(s) configured and and ready to go prior to upgrading. http://www200.pair.com/mecham/debian/2.4.0/ Debian's amavisd-new expects those files in /etc/amavis/conf.d I suggest stopping amavisd-new, and to prevent dpkg errors, rename amavisd.conf prior to upgrading. Edit 15-content_filter_mode to enable spam and virus checks (Debian disables them). If you have the files in place prior to upgrading, remember not to overwrite them during installation. The other obvious option would be to copy your files over the top of the Debian files after the fact, and reload amavisd-new.
