make sure clamd has the permissions on /var/run/clamav, and of course, 
don't forget to restart it.
you can set LogVerbose to get more infos.

I guess you are using rpm as your packaging system. just make sure 
/etc/clamd.conf is the right config file for your clamd. If using rpm, then
# rpm -ql clamd
(or clamav?) should show you the path to clamd.conf.
