It was fixed half-way. The missing part I posted recently (in two parts),
and will be included in 2.6.3.

Yes, setting $mailfrom_notify_* explicitly avoids the problem entirely,
no special implications. I'd recommend just to do that and not to
bother with the two additional patches.
