What you didn' t say is that you are running the amd64 code. right?

this is a known problem, that apparently only I know about. seems every 
time I try to diagnose it the clamav people insult me.
(freebsd 8.x seem to work)

I have reported this to clamd directly.

your only option is to go to clamav 0.96.1

to test (before trying amavisd)

after you start clamd (make sure 0.96.2 isn't running)
do this:
clamdscan -V.

and report this as an error on the clamav def list so they know there is 
more than one person with the problem.
