and consider that the database still has to write to the hard disk, and 
with filesystem, compression is easily implemented .
Our tests showed it faster to write, however:   unless you enable the 
sql logging, you don't have an easy way to search by subject 
line/sender/ recipient.

All depends on what you need.
(oh, and if a LOT of sql logging.  implement partitioning.)
