Dear list,

Here is a summary of the responses on my question as promised.

The respondents told me that we are paying way too much for the virus
scanner on the mail gateway. This is because we are paying on a per
e-mail address basis instead of using a server license. Server licenses
are much cheaper, they vary between Eur 500 - 600
It does not matter which virus scanner we choose, F-secure, Symantec,
Sophos to name a few.
However, most respondents are really a fan of Avira, see
http://www.avira.com/ The website notes a price of approximately Eur
320.
The AMaViS project people just build the SAVAPI support for Avira in
AMaViS. It is available in amavis-2.7.0-pre* and extremely fast. It
seems that Avira belongs to one of the best scanners on the market.

We are going to have a look at it!

Cheers,
       Harrie

Subject: [AMaViS-user] Cheap commercial virusscanner to use with AMaViS
inbusiness environment.

Dear list,

The Energy Research Foundation of the Netherlands will receive
substantial less money from the government next year. I have been asked
to look for a cheaper commercial AV-scanner. At the moment we run AMaViS
with Kaspersky AV for Mail Server and ClamAV on our mail gateway
together with SpamAssassin.

ECN does not allow us to run freeware mail AV scanners only, so we need
a commercial virus scanner together with ClamAV. We have a Kaspersky
license for 1500 mail addresses and that costs us EUR 13.000 per year.

Next year we plan to run 2 load balancing mail servers on a ESX server
as a virtual machines. That means the license costs will double... That
is too much.

My question to you that also runs AMaViS with AV scanners in a business
environment is simple, what do you use as commercial virus scanner and
how much does it costs.

Please reply to me personally to avoid clobbering the list with a
non-AMaViS issue. I will summarize the responses.

Cheers,
       Harrie
