Hi Bill, While not directly answering your question re using Ambari this way, you may want to check out SPM (see http://sematext.com/spm/index.html ) for monitoring and alerting for HBase, HDFS, MapReduce (and Solr, ElasticSearch, Kafka, and JVM).
