This deployArtifact goal does at this time not support updating existing artifacts. It simply creates the resource again (if possible) on the client. Since the associations of the artifacts with the features are probably created using a filter on the bundle symbolic name it is automatically associated with the correct feature.
It is currently not possible to update artifacts in any other way than manually. See AMDATU-701 for maven-plugin related issues.
