Since IANAL and since the copyright law in Germany is perhaps different
than that in the US, let's put this difficult issue aside for a
while.

Don't you want Atmel to include Amforth among their recommended design
practices? Atmel does endorse (and include) GNU's AVR-GCC and AVR-LIBC
for their permissive run-time licenses.
