Just a quick update and a note about a problem I encountered (which might help someone else facing the same issue):
I was able to build using the instructions given in the Linux User's Guide. But I was unable to run, at any baud rate, the amforth-shell.py. This turned out to be an issue with the COM port drivers when using VirtualBox to emulate linux on a Windows 10 host.
