I have also the same problem, and I guess I know why this is happening..
Entering /query F<irst letter of user>, and TAB, inserts an extra space
after the nick, which is then passed on to the query window (check your
logs, you will probably have logs with names ending with space)...
So, If you want it to work manually, you'll have to delete the space after
the nick before completing the /query command (this IS a bug in AmIRC 3.3,
which hopefully will be fixed "soon")...
