Hi Iain.

There actually is already one way for irc clients to determine what the
server they connect to do support and is also something that will appear
supported in the next release of mIRC, ive already sent a mail off to Olli
about it although no replies have come yet =)

Anyhows, most IRCd's out there send out a PROTOCTL when you connect. On
DALnet you would recive something like:
NOQUIT WATCH=128 SAFELIST are available on this server

On Undernet you would get:
SILENCE=15 WHOX WALLCHOPS USERIP CPRIVMSG CNOTICE MODES=6 MAXCHANNELS=10
MAXBANS=30 NICKLEN=9 TOPICLEN=160 KICKLEN=160 MAP are supported by this
server

Many hybrids that support for example halfops and other channel modes that
would affect how a client handles send out a PREFIX=(ohv)@%v in the protoctl
which tells what channel modes are accociated with access modes aswell which
mode is associated with what userlist prefix. Parsing this on connect would
allow the client to easilly provide support for any variation of modes and
prefixes.

Anyhows, just the tired thoughts and words from me.

Yours

Thomas J. Stensas
