I've seen (and have one from Midland)  field strength meters that include a 
headphone jack for monitoring of AM signals (and for hum/noise on CW carrier).  
They are only a short whip, germanium diode, and a bypass cap across meter 
and phones.  A pot is used to adjust the sensitivity, or just pull or push the 
whip in/out.  Works great...
