which is the same as taking the square root.   ^(1/3) cube root   ^
(1/4) fourth, etc..


  The ASCII 'programming' convention is \sqrt{n}.


The labor intensive way to do an approximation of the symbol in an ASCII monospaced font is to make the bar as an underline on the line *above* the numbers, like:

           ____
          V 2   = 1.41421...

 using of course a capital 'V' in front,


but it can get messy fast, and if the recipient's mail client doesn't handle monospacing well, it turns right into a dog's breakfast real fast...


  But, it's the Thought that Counts, at any rate!
