I think they are hiding in the bushes waiting for AM activity to return from dormancy. Where is the AM these days on 80m? On another note, some months ago I was on 3880 LSB at legal limit while the 'big dogs' on 3878 were present. After about a 1 hour QSO the boys on 78 had vanished. I thought the trade off was fair since 3880 was now clear for undisturbed AM after I signed out. Is this a worthwhile tactic for us AM'ers to try? After all, running SSB at legal limit will more effectively increase the LSB power than AM at the same PEP legal limit. If we tried the same tactic on 3890 USB that would be viewed as malicious QRM since USB is not the convention on 80m. FWIW, I recall back several years ago when the boys on 78 switched to USB to really trash the AM'ers on 80. We don't need to stoop that low.
