Hmm, on Linux I got similar behaviour, but not the same. If you release
over "File", then the file menu is posted (and the option menu isn't
unposted).
I just fixed this bug, maybe it's fixed yours too (it should have).

Yeh, I forgot to mention that when typing the email, the 'file' menu also
got posted
Well the problem was the <ButtonRelease> binding didn't check if it was a menu posted from an optionbutton, so it just seemed like moving from one item on a menubar to another. I've fixed it (hope it will work at your end too, I'll send out another demo with bugfixes sometime).

You should probably bring the menu to the front if the menu option is
clicked and the menu is already posted.

You mean with raise?

Yeh
Will do.

Also when hovering off, if the mouse
button is not down, it should unpost.

I think it does this already.... unless I misunderstood.

That was still a follow on from before, coz if for some unknown reason we
lose focus without the menu unposting (either due to the known bug -
hopefully now fixed, or some unknown) then when it get focus again due to
hover it should recognise this and unpost when the hover is removed.
For the optionmenu? Or the pulldown ones? Or both?
