just sent all the afternoon on that...
We can do anything :
system tray icons are rendered with 16 colors using the system palette.
This palette contains dark red, green, blue, cyan, yellow, magenta,
light same, black, white, dark grey, light grey...
I can say you that's really hard to do a beautiful image with that :p
I tried several tings to reduce colors of actual icons and that's
ugly... So I think we should leave our icons like they are...
Anyway, if users still complain, my mum found an interesting site. I
looked at what they do and seems good (although I didn't test) :

They simply propose patches for every Windows versions impacted by the
bug...
