It seems that lots of people are getting misformed entries from search engines.
After hand-rolling my logformat my corrupt lines are down to nil. (Albeit on a small
test group: ~ 100,000 lines). Is this some instance of the servers translating the
referrer data (i.e. converting URL/CGI entities to their realworld eqivalents), or
are the search engines actually putting out misformed referrer data?
If the search engines are the ones in the wrong (and I remember Altavista,
RealNames, Infoseek and Webcrawler in one set of examples), then shouldn't we all
send them an friendly email notifying them of their mistake?
If the search engines are in the wrong, I'm offering to draft a letter that we can
all sign. If the servers are converting referrer data, maybe we should tally up
which ones are doing it and send them a letter?
