Thanks..that worked a treat!
I'm using a PERL script to tidy up some messy lines in the logs and it
turned out the script was ocassionally failing to close quotes when it wrote
out the new log..problem solved.

Turn debugging on. That will report which lines were corrupt, and where they
were corrupt.
