Maybe it's a memory issue? You could just be at the point where you were
short of memory, and using a new version tipped the balance.

But I'm confused about this claim that it took 34 minutes and then you ran
it again (on 5.1?) and it only took a few seconds. The only way it can have
less work to do the second time is if you are using DNS lookups or cache
files.
