First I'd like to say that I agree 100% on the relative accuracy that one
can get from these databases today and, have found many errors in them
myself.

On the other hand, reverse dns lookup is at least, as bad as IP to location
databases when used to guess geographic location. So many IP addresses
don't have correctly configured PTR records. Then, top level domains
supposedly point to U.S. locations but not always. Still, reverse dns can
take forever to complete especially when querying thru a not-so-fast
Internet connection.

About licenses and alternative (i.e. free, open) data sources, some people
are already working on them and may eventually become in the most reliable,
complete and updated IP to location databases. For example:

http://ip.ludost.net/

IMO, it's surely a trade off between price, availability, commercial
licenses and information quality, but it would be great to allow Analog to
use all geographic data sources as they become available.

Regards
