Another workaround is to apply the "-noaudio" command line option on emulator startup. This can be done by externally starting the emulator or adding "-noaudio" to the eclipse run configuration at "Additional Emulator Command Line Options" (setting the general android preferences "Launch Settings" did not work for me).
