I have a hard time believing that an experienced programmer (20+ years
experience) cannot follow simple tutorials or look at source code.
There is a *wealth* of information on the android site; more than enough to
get you started in writing java applications for android.  The plugin that
is supplied with Eclipse makes it even easier.

Google has almost made it too easy.  Probably the most complex part is
learning how the application interacts with the phone (intents, etc)... once
you've got that down, it's just java... and the packages are very well
documented.

You certainly don't need to be an 'insider' to learn how this works.
