well ... what carrier was the phone made for? i know at&t and t-mo's 3g networks are not compatible. so if it's locked to say t-mo and you want to unlock it and use it on at&t, you won't get 3g (you'll get edge only). if you are just staying with t-mo (or whoever), then unlocking won't affect it.
