Once the android platform is baked and open sourced many other
hardware environments will be ported to.
Is this a fair statement?

1. The API is very broad. The architecture reminds me of a micro
kernel very much. Activity etc etc
This makes it quite easy to write desktop apps in the same language on
a Windows, Linux desktop.
The average desktop has web camera, ability to send messages (using
SMS gateways for example), GPS (no, but it can do it via IP address
geocoding for example).

2. The virtual machine is the only thing that needs porting ?
Would anything else need to be ported.

3. Would companies bother ?

4. what's in it for a Telecom Gateway companies to support Android ?

The reality is that the average consumer is not gong to get why its a
great choice.
it call comes down to the number of handsets out in the wild as to who
wins.
Sure the telecoms gateways push certain ones too, but its the consumer
making the choices these days.

If the Google search home page starts to advertise the Google Android
platform as a global generic mobile platform this will get it into the
average consumers mind space. Then when they are at the phone shop
looking they may ask "which ones supports the Google OS ?".
