I have exactly the same problem. We've actually switched to using SMS
messaging for now. It would be great to hear word from Google on this
issue. If we knew that offline message sending would be supported in
future we could switch back to gtalk.
We thought about making the assumption that devices will nearly always
be connected to the internet. I think this is horrible from the users
perspective though. Mobile users are used to the "asynchronisity" of
SMS. When they turn their phone off, and later on, they expect to see
all the messages that were sent while the phone was deactivated.
I don't think its true that the average mobile phone user leaves their
phones charged and on 100% of the time.
