oh boy... I have figured out what went wrong... I used the "geo" command to send location fixes, but this thing takes GPS coordinates as lon/lat pairs, not as lat/lon (like any GEO-related API that I have ever seen does), so the map dropped me in some uncharted lands (which were gray...).
