I think you might be better off getting a Motorola Droid. It's only a little more expensive on eBay than the LG, but runs pretty much stock Android with fewer manufacturer-specific customizations. This means that whatever compatibility testing you do is going to be more meaningful with the Droid.

Also, a Droid update to Froyo (Android 2.2) is already rolling out (waiting for my Milestone to be updated to 2.2 as well).
