I recently pushed a new version of my app that had install to sd card set to preferExternal. Then I had about a dozen users email saying they couldn't install the new version. Most of them uninstalled the old version to try to get it to work and were left with no app at all. I noticed a trend of HTC phones, but there was at least one Droid in there. Anyway, I changed it to auto and they were able to install again without issue.
Bear in mind though that during the time that version was up about 400 new users downloaded the app and probably 2500 updated. So that's a pretty small affected percentage. I do frequently get users who randomly can't download or install the app. I have a canned response prepared in gmail for these cases, and I put the apk up on the web so users can download it off-market. Here is my standard response: Any errors when downloading the app are errors with the market, and are completely outside my control. I have searched around the internet and found two possible fixes. The first is to sign out of Google Talk and then sign back in. Apparently Google Talk and the Market are linked somehow. http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Android+Market/thread?tid=768ff3029eb670cf&hl=en, http://androinica.com/2010/03/01/tips-android-phone-wont-download-apps-log-in-to-google-talk/ The second is to go to your phone settings > Applications > Manage Applications > All. Scroll down to find Market, and press it. Press Force stop, press Clear cache. Then try downloading again. In the extreme case (I have to do this every time Google Maps updates), also press Clear data in the screen above.
