Is there an official resource out there, somewhere ... maybe a ticket on the wishlist of an Android bugtracker ... with the status of updating Dalvik to be able to run dynamic JVM languages, such as Jython/JRuby/etc?
Even if no one is currently working on this (and no one is currently scheduled to work on this, nor is it even being considered), it would be great to have a link to something that shows the state of this. I'm a professional Ruby coder, and I get questions *all the time* about whether or not Android applications can be coded in Ruby. Everyone knows that Android runs some kind of Java and everyone knows that Ruby runs on Java, so the question makes quite a bit of sense ... until you explain how Dalvik works :) If anyone knows anything about this, I would really appreciate some kindof educated feedback. There are a number of other threads that mention the possibility of getting dynamic languages running on Dalvik ... if someone posts something useful here, I'll post updates to some of the other threads wish people that are interested: http://groups.google.com/group/android-beginners/browse_thread/thread/59350a39960c6b28/8363e867741eba2a Thanks! I understand that, perhaps, no one is working on this. But I would love to get feedback from someone who actually *knows* rather than people who are guessing. PS. Although dynamic applications on Dalvik would likely significantly increase the memory usage required for the application(s), languages like Ruby are very, very good for creating DSLs. And ... DSLs for writing Android apps would be insanely hot, in my honest opinion. I would love nothing more than to create a (J)Ruby library that *greatly* simplifies Android application development and makes it easier for developers to get up-and-running fast, creating Android applications. Once an application needed to become more efficient, it could be fully or partially re-coded in Java, just as Ruby/Python is often re-coded in C to increase performance.
