Note that standard phone hardware usually assumes the phone will be a USB target, not a USB host. This means RS232 dongles won't work without a lot of fiddling around with USB hubs and all that. If you want to support the broadest set of hardware, the best bet is to interface with Bluetooth. That works pretty much the same on all phones.
