To expand on this: The behavior the OP is seeing is the emulator starting up. During startup, the text "Android" will blink. Even on a fast machine, it may take several minutes for the emulator to load and start the program. For this reason, you should leave the emulator running if possible while you're working, or work with an actual device if you can.
