I've seen the same thing on my Nexus One (2.1.1 FRG83D).
The right side of the screen was shown after zooming in. The left side
was still gray and loading.

Then the right side became gray and the left side was showing
correctly. The map was still loading.

Then the right side was showing again and the left side became gray.
The map was still loading.

This repeated for a few times until it settled down and the entire
screen was filled with the map (no gray areas).
