I've developed both apps and the actual Android system itself from source just fine on OS X (10.6 on a macbook pro).
Performance is just fine IMO and runs very fast. The only thing is for building the Android OS, you'll need to create another filesystem on your mac (I just did it as a file, a sparsebundle thing) that is case- sensitive (the default OS X FS (HFS+) is not). I followed this tutorial: http://www.quietlycoding.com/?p=1 Note that for building 'gingerbread' you don't need Java 1.5, the 1.6 included on OS X works just fine, so just start at step 2. Good luck.
