Decoding a single MP3 for a background audio track is not too bad. On the G1, OGG is a better format, less memory overhead and startup latency, plus you get seamless looping which MP3 does not do.
I don't recommend using compressed audio like MP3 or OGG if you have lots of sound effects, because of the CPU overhead in decompressing them.
