Speaking as a user, this is why I prefer an Android phone to a Symbian one (never used an iPhone, so won't comment on that).
Poorly behaving applications - yes, they exist. But you could go to a grocery store and buy milk that happens to have gone sour. Doesn't mean you have to drink the whole bottle.
The batteries will get better, and the processors will become less power-hungry over time - when Android was first being developed (2005-2008), you couldn't have a gigahertz processor in a pocket-sized, less than half-inch thick form factor. Look where things are now.
