I'd suggest you get a decent book on Java and play around with it a bit before tackling Android. Shouldn't take a lot with your background, but a few days doing that would be time well spent.
(Trying to think of an application to implement, but nothing coming to mind at present. Maybe someone else has an idea for a command line Java app/toy?)
