I second the root access. All us T-Mobile G1 suckers are out cold for now. My trackball stopped scrolling to the right and T-Mobile is sending me a new one but all my data and apps will be lost because they're all written to internal memory.
I'm a little sad that the Google folks didn't see this as a huge issue as the iPhone has syncing with iTunes and it's no problem to upgrade/ switch/replace between iPhone/touch hardware. What's the recommended way for Android users?
