I don't know what all the resistance is about.

This particular problem causes a lot of perfectly good apps to crash and burn on the dual core machines. Imagine that. Some guy goes out there and drops $300-700 on a brand new latest/hottest dual core Android device only to discover that practically nothing works unless you turn the sound off.

It's really bad for the Android brand.

And I post it here because it's a development issue. How do we get access to sound effects with attenuation on the platform without the SoundPool? I'm assuming that Google doesn't want everyone to be rolling their own sound libs since they went to the trouble of building it in the first place.

Maybe I shouldn't have targeted Dianne with the question. Sorry about that, Dianne! But it is an issue that merits the attention of someone at Google. I just don't know who that would be, or how to get in contact with them. Hopefully Dianne does and she'll be kind enough to pass it along.

Cheers!

Nah, it's a development issue. I need sound in my app, and the spotty
nature of support for this API is rather a big thorn in my side.
Probably in yours as well if you're building anything that needs
attenuation capability.

Sorry Dianne. I thought you were a general contact person for us peons since
I see you replying frequently. Could you do me a favor and pass this
question on to whoever is appropriate to handle it?
Thanks!

We're seeing a lot more devices coming onto the scene with two or more
CPUs, and the SoundPool is broken on those devices. There is some kind of
race condition that's causing a busy hang from time to time when playing
sounds. The only workaround is to turn off the sound on such devices or
avoid using the SoundPool.
I'd say only 3 in 5 of the games in the market work on the SGS2, and maybe
1 in 5 works on the SGT10.1...with the sound turned on.
Not having a reliable API for these popular devices makes developing for
them a nightmare.
