Chris, You should only add the <intent-filter> into one activity. Intents are communication channels between the layout and the code (to put it roughly). When you have an intent in an activity, that activity is the main communication point of the app.
Here's an example from the Dashboard Demo at this site: http://blahti.wordpress.com/2011/03/14/build-dashboard-ui-for-android/.
