Ok ok, I know, and I knew it was a daft question when I asked it :) Of course I had already searched for this, and I had actually found what your link eventually led me to, but I assumed that the code was out of date because I wasn't aware of the way the android source uses private APIs. I assumed that this was deprecated code, as I couldn't get it to compile. Having done some research I now understand that this isn't the way to go about what I'm after.
