The ALSA lib is used on Linux operating systems to provide sound capabilities and some generic drivers (see http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Main_Page), but I don't know what role does it play in Android nor if there is an API to access it, so I would also be curious as to what is the answer to your question.
