Normally by default it is Linear Layout (for me it is)...but there was some talk in last years Google I/O for promoting Relative Layout(is better)., May be because you are using the latest sdk it is creating a relative layout(Not sure). But you should not worry much, Relative seems to be better and if needed you can change to Linear manually.
